Why Relationships Still Matter in a Digital-First Business Environment

It seems like every business is on Instagram these days. So are we. Websites have become increasingly sophisticated, and as I mentioned in an earlier post, there’s no shortage of tools—some effective, some not—within what has become a thriving web builder and SEO industry.

At the end of the day, the goal is simple: reach clients and build business. Years ago, trade shows were a primary way we did that. Now, everything has moved online. The challenge is that every competitor is there too. So how do you stand out?

Today, a business is often judged by its website, social posts, and a handful of reviews. The reality is, all of that can be curated—or even manipulated. So what does that leave?

For us, it comes down to relationships.

We’ve been fortunate to be in business long enough to build lasting relationships. Over time, you develop an understanding of what your clients are looking for, and they learn what to expect from you. That mutual trust creates a better, more natural way of doing business.

Of course, relationships don’t build themselves. We still need to find new clients, and we do that by focusing on alignment rather than volume.

Our website, Instagram, and other platforms help attract people who connect with our aesthetic. From there, the goal isn’t to broadcast endlessly—it’s to engage meaningfully. If what you offer genuinely benefits someone, they’ll take a closer look.

Personally, I’ve always preferred targeted follow-up over a broad, unfocused approach. Having thousands of followers means very little if it doesn’t translate into real business. What matters is working with the right people.

That said, exploring new ways to reach new audiences is still important. Growth requires stepping outside your existing circle. But continuing to push toward people who simply aren’t interested doesn’t move the needle.

When there’s genuine interest and alignment, the focus shifts to service—understanding what the client needs and making the process easy. Time and again, I’ve been told how much it matters that we answer the phone or respond quickly.

It sounds simple, but it works.

Those of us who have been around for a while remember when that was just how business was done.
